History and development of the BMW 1 Series: a milestone of innovation and sportiness

Since its launch in 2004, the BMW 1 Series has been a key model in the German brand's range. Positioned as the entry-level vehicle in the BMW family, this compact has evolved over the years to keep pace with the latest technological innovations and market demands, without losing its sporty and dynamic essence.

First generation (2004-2011): The start of a new era

The first generation of the BMW 1 Series, known internally as the E87, represented a major stake for BMW in the premium compact segment. Despite its smaller size compared to the brand's other models, the 1 Series was notable for retaining one distinctive feature: rear-wheel drive. This configuration set it apart from most of its competitors, who opted for front-wheel drive, and provided a more dynamic driving experience in line with BMW's philosophy.

The design of this first version was the work of Chris Bangle, with a ground-breaking aesthetic. It featured a long bonnet, a high beltline and proportions that suggested power and control. This generation of the 1 Series was available in three- and five-door body styles, as well as coupé and convertible versions, offering great versatility for different types of drivers.

In terms of powertrains, the first-generation 1 Series was available with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, all of which were efficient and powerful, most notably the 130i with an inline six-cylinder engine delivering 265 horsepower. It was also one of the first generations to introduce technologies such as braking energy regeneration and the use of the automatic start-stop system, which showed BMW's focus on greater efficiency.

Second generation (2011-2019): Refinement and advanced technology.

The second generation of the 1 Series, dubbed the F20/F21, arrived in 2011 with significant improvements across the board. While retaining rear-wheel drive, it featured a more refined and elegant design. Streamlined headlights, a more prominent kidney grille and softer lines gave it a more modern appearance without losing its sporty character.

In this generation, BMW placed greater emphasis on technology. The interior of the 1 Series was modernised with the introduction of the iDrive infotainment system, improving connectivity and occupant comfort. In addition, more luxurious equipment options were included, bringing the 1 Series even closer to premium standard.

In terms of engines, the range was expanded to include even more efficient versions, such as the 116d EfficientDynamics, which offered very low fuel consumption without sacrificing driving pleasure. At the top end of the range, the M135i with a 320 hp engine became one of the benchmarks in the sport compact segment.

Third generation (2019-present): A paradigm shift

The third generation of the BMW 1 Series, known as the F40, marked a radical change in the model's philosophy. For the first time, BMW decided to adopt front-wheel drive for the 1 Series, marking a major shift in the vehicle's tradition. This change was driven by the need to make the car more spacious and efficient, but did not sacrifice the brand's characteristic driving dynamics, thanks to the implementation of advanced traction control systems.

The design also received a significant update. The new 1 Series features a more muscular and robust aesthetic, with LED headlights, a larger grille and a more aggressive stance. Inside, high-quality materials and a new infotainment system with a larger screen and touch functions lend an air of luxury not often found in vehicles in this segment.

In terms of powertrains, the third generation includes diesel and petrol versions, along with a plug-in hybrid variant for more environmentally conscious drivers. The M135i xDrive, now using all-wheel drive, is the sportiest option, with a 306bhp engine and impressive road and track performance.

Technological innovation and connectivity

The BMW 1 Series has been at the forefront of incorporating advanced technology. Since its first generation, it has been a pioneer in the implementation of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, parking assistance and lane departure warning. Connectivity has also been a strong point, with the possibility of integrating smartphones, accessing apps and using services such as BMW ConnectedDrive, which allow remote control of the vehicle.

In addition, the 1 Series has always prioritised safety. The latest generation includes numerous active safety systems as standard, such as Forward Collision Assist, Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection and Automatic Emergency Braking. These elements make the BMW 1 Series a car that is not only fun to drive, but also safe for everyday use.

A compact that keeps on evolving

The BMW 1 Series has come a long way since its debut in 2004. Each generation has adapted to the demands of the market while maintaining the brand's core values of sportiness, innovation and luxury. Although the move to front-wheel drive in its latest generation generated debate among brand purists, BMW has proven that it is still capable of delivering an exciting and unique driving experience in this segment.

Today, the BMW 1 Series is positioned as one of the most attractive premium compacts on the market, offering an ideal combination of design, technology and performance for both efficiency-seekers and those who value thrills behind the wheel.
